In 1988, Rev. Kovalchuk co-led efforts to unite the two Ukrainian churches in Philadelphia and co-pastored the First Ukrainian Baptist Church of Philadelphia until 1994.

Peter Tymciw and his wife, Nadia, had the privilege of attending Rev. Dr. Kovalchuk's funeral on December 29, 2017, in PA., and participating in the Memorial Service on December 28, 2017, on behalf of Ukrainian Evangelical Baptists in Canada. 

His life exemplified that of a tireless servant of the Lord Jesus Christ.  Well done Rev. Dr. John Kovalchuk, well done! Matthew 25:21
